McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II — the day-attack jump jet the Marines flew off Tarawa-class decks and tiny forward strips:

1. By the numbers: 14.1 metres long, 9.25 across that big anhedral wing, a Rolls-Royce Pegasus vectored-thrust turbofan good for about Mach 0.9 — and zero knots straight up, which is the party trick.
2. Modelled as she sits: the bicycle landing gear with wing outriggers, the LIDS rumble strips under the intakes, the tandem cockpit hump, and the four nozzle fairings along the belly.
